Material Cultures has a long-standing association with HG Matthews and has used Strocks at the Design Museum and on numerous other projects.
At Wolves Lane Centre in Wood Green, the former council-run plant nursery and garden centre has been revitalised by a consortium of community organisations and volunteers. Four low-carbon buildings have been added to the site, constructed using bio-based materials including clay, straw and locally sourced timber.
The scheme focuses on growing and distributing wholesome food while engaging local communities through education, enterprise and events. It forms part of the Mayor of London’s Good Growth-funded Market Garden City programme, which supports local food production, access to green space, training, volunteering and employment.
Strocks and clay mortar were used in two of the buildings, complementing the earth plasters and working alongside the straw and timber structural elements.
