Developers GS8  planned a 10-home development in Walthamstow, North East London, designed to meet demanding Passivhaus standards on a site that had been used as a light industrial mews for around 100 years.

With a strong focus on minimising site waste, the project team identified the need for additional thermal mass alongside the lightweight timber structure and insulation. This became the first project to use Site Strocks, which helped reduce waste while providing thermal mass, sound insulation and fire resistance within the party walls.

The site material was sampled and tested before being transported to HG Matthews for processing. Although working with a new material presented some initial challenges, these were successfully resolved and helped inform future improvements to the production process.

Site Strocks were delivered on time and on budget, together with premixed mortar made from the same site material. Transport costs were comparable with traditional muck-away and block delivery, while the reduction in waste disposal generated significant savings.

A fair-faced block finish was chosen for the completed walls, complementing the wider palette of materials used throughout the development.
